Q & A

What is dhikr, and why is it central to Sufism?

Remembrance

Dhikr, or remembrance, may take many forms, but the essence of all methods is the invocation or remembrance of the Divine Name, "Allah", and through La ilaha illallah, meaning "there is no god but Allah".

It is evident that the path of Tasawwuf is in the knowledge of the Shariah and following the Prophetic Sunnah. The disciple must adhere to the inner and outer aspects of the Shariah and engage in constant remembrance, as the essence of this path is not to waste a breath without the remembrance of Allah.

The name of our Lord is "Allah", and it is the dhikr of "Allah" that is the source code of this universe, as mentioned in the hadith: "The final hour shall not arise until it is no longer said on earth: 'Allah, Allah'" [Sahih Muslim 148].
