Q & A
What does “Remember Me, and I will remember you” mean?
One may ask what the reward for remembrance is, and this verse of the Qur'an answers that question: "So, remember Me and I will remember you." [Qur'an, al-Baqarah 2:152]
What happens when Allah, the Creator, the Almighty, the All-Knowing, remembers someone? The answer is in the hadith in which Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "Allah thus stated, I am near to the thought of my servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers me in his heart, I also remember him in my Heart, and if he remembers me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than his and if he draws closer by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit and if he draws near me by the cubit, I draw near him by the space covered by two hands and if he walks towards me, I rush towards him." [Sahih Muslim 2675]
Subhan Allah, this is the reward for remembrance: the greatest reward for a lover is that the Beloved remembers him. Imagine: when one remembers Allah the Almighty, the Creator of All remembers him.
Though in this world it is not possible to behold Allah's vision by the eye, by due remembrance the servant can achieve the perpetual state of ihsan and behold the vision of Allah through his heart. For the believers, the everlasting sweet reward would be in the hereafter, the visage: "On that day shall faces be radiant, gazing upon their Lord" [Qur'an, al-Qiyamah 75:22-23].
