* What is the difference between Islam and Sufism?
There is no separation. Sufism (Tasawwuf) is not a different religion beside Islam. It is the inner dimension of Islam, the part concerned with sincerity and the state of the heart, corresponding to the level of Ihsan the Prophet ﷺ described.
People sometimes speak of “Islam” and “Sufism” as two separate things. They are not. In the Hadith of Jibril, the Prophet ﷺ named three levels of the one religion: Islam, which is outward practice; Iman, which is inward belief; and Ihsan, to worship Allah as if you see Him. Tasawwuf is simply the pursuit of that third level.
So Tasawwuf sits within Islam the way sincerity sits within an act of worship. Remove it and the soul is taken out of the religion. It adds nothing foreign; it deepens what is already there.
اسلام اور تصوف میں کیا فرق ہے؟
اِن میں کوئی جدائی نہیں۔ تصوف اسلام کے پہلو بہ پہلو کوئی الگ دین نہیں۔ یہ اسلام کا باطنی پہلو ہے، وہ حصہ جو اخلاص اور دل کی کیفیت سے متعلق ہے، اور جو احسان کے اُس درجے کے مطابق ہے جسے نبی ﷺ نے بیان فرمایا۔
لوگ کبھی کبھی “اسلام” اور “تصوف” کو دو الگ چیزوں کے طور پر بیان کرتے ہیں۔ حالانکہ ایسا نہیں۔ حدیثِ جبریل میں نبی ﷺ نے ایک ہی دین کے تین درجے بیان فرمائے: اسلام، جو ظاہری عمل ہے؛ ایمان، جو باطنی اعتقاد ہے؛ اور احسان، یعنی اللہ کی عبادت اِس طرح کرنا گویا تم اُسے دیکھ رہے ہو۔ تصوف بس اُسی تیسرے درجے کی طلب کا نام ہے۔
پس تصوف اسلام کے اندر اُسی طرح موجود ہے جس طرح اخلاص کسی عبادت کے عمل کے اندر۔ اِسے نکال دو تو دین سے روح نکل جاتی ہے۔ یہ کوئی اجنبی چیز نہیں جوڑتا؛ یہ اُسی چیز کو گہرا کرتا ہے جو پہلے سے موجود ہے۔
