Q & A
What were the four tasks of the Prophet’s mission?
Allah explicitly mentions four tasks of the mission for His Last Prophet ﷺ: reciting the Qur'an, teaching the Book, wisdom and purifying. These constitute the primary objectives of the Prophetic mission.
At the time Abraham peace be upon him built the Ka'ba, he supplicated and requested Allah to send a Messenger amongst them, who would teach them the Book and purify them: "Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify (tazkiah) them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise." [Qur'an, al-Baqarah 2:129]
Allah answered his prayers and sent His Last Prophet ﷺ with the mission: "Just as We have sent among you a Messenger from yourselves reciting to you Our verses and purifying (tazkiah) you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and teaching you that which you did not know." [Qur'an, al-Baqarah 2:151]
These objectives form the foundation upon which the Islamic law, code of conduct and governance are based.
