* Do I need a spiritual guide, or can I learn the path from books?
Knowledge of the inner path has to be taken from someone who possesses it, not from books alone. Knowledge of the Qur'an and Sunnah does not suffice until it is applied, and it is learned by example under guidance.
Tasawwuf is practical knowledge, and practical knowledge is transmitted by company and example, not by reading alone. Throughout history, seekers gathered around teachers to learn the discipline of the heart, because the knowledge does not suffice until it is applied, and it must be put into practice under the guidance of one who has it himself.
This is why the path has always been taught the way the Companions learned from the Prophet ﷺ: by precept and example, and then by putting that knowledge to work through worship and remembrance. Books inform; a living guide forms.
کیا مجھے کسی روحانی رہنما کی ضرورت ہے، یا میں یہ راستہ کتابوں سے سیکھ سکتا ہوں؟
باطنی راستے کا علم کسی ایسے شخص سے لینا ہوتا ہے جو اُس کا حامل ہو، محض کتابوں سے نہیں۔ قرآن و سنت کا علم اُس وقت تک کافی نہیں ہوتا جب تک اُس پر عمل نہ کیا جائے، اور یہ رہنمائی کے تحت مثال کے ذریعے سیکھا جاتا ہے۔
تصوف عملی علم ہے، اور عملی علم صحبت اور مثال سے منتقل ہوتا ہے، محض پڑھنے سے نہیں۔ پوری تاریخ میں طالب اساتذہ کے گرد جمع ہوتے رہے تاکہ دل کا نظم و ضبط سیکھیں، کیونکہ علم اُس وقت تک کافی نہیں ہوتا جب تک اُس پر عمل نہ کیا جائے، اور اِسے کسی ایسے شخص کی رہنمائی میں عمل میں لانا ہوتا ہے جو خود اُس کا حامل ہو۔
یہی وجہ ہے کہ یہ راستہ ہمیشہ اُسی طرح سکھایا گیا جس طرح صحابہ نے نبی ﷺ سے سیکھا: تعلیم اور مثال کے ذریعے، اور پھر اُس علم کو عبادت اور ذکر کے ذریعے عمل میں لا کر۔ کتابیں آگاہ کرتی ہیں؛ ایک زندہ رہنما بناتا ہے۔
