Q & A

Can a shaykh see the future or know the unseen?

Foundations of Faith

At times people believe that the Sufi masters know everything and can foretell the future. The Last Prophet ﷺ was given the most knowledge, yet he admitted to not knowing what was to come. Therefore, those who hold such beliefs, that there are people who can foretell everything about the future, are in great error.

The absurdity of this belief is apparent from the hadith narrated by Jabir may Allah be pleased with him as part of a lengthy narration concerning the farewell Hajj, that Allah's Last Prophet ﷺ said, "If I had known then what I know now, I would not have brought these animals with me for sacrifice." [Sahih al-Bukhari 1651] The one given the most knowledge speaks here of a thing he had not known at the time.

Informing others of the unseen belongs with flying through the air and walking on water. Where a man does any of it while contravening the Shariah, committing an unlawful act without an extenuating circumstance that legally excuses it, or neglecting an obligatory act without lawful reason, what he shows is istidraj from Satan, and Allah has placed him as a temptation to the ignorant. If one does not follow the Shariah and the rulings of the Shariah, the association to a great shaykh would not allow deliverance from the hellfire.
