Q & A
What are the six articles of faith (Aqida) in Islam?
There are six articles of faith, the Aqaid, that a person must uphold without any doubt in order to be a Muslim. He must believe in:
1. Allah 2. His Angels 3. His Scriptures 4. His Messengers 5. The Day of Judgement 6. Qadr, predestination
The hadith about Iman and ihsan signifies that there are three levels in the Deen, Islam, Iman and ihsan, and every level consists of certain articles.
Belief in Allah takes in His Lordship (Ruboobiyah), His Divinity (Uloohiyah), and His names and attributes. Belief in His Angels is to believe that they exist, and that they are bodies of light who dwell in the heavens. Belief in His Scriptures is firm belief in the Messages that Allah's Messengers and Prophets brought to mankind from Him, and in their having delivered those Messages, each to the nation he was sent to.
Belief in His Messengers is to attest firmly that Allah sent every nation a Messenger, calling it to worship Him alone, and it entails believing that every Messenger was truthful and delivered Allah's Message to his nation. Belief in the Day of Judgement is to hold firmly that every event regarding that Day is true, the questioning in the grave, the resurrection, the Reckoning, the Scale, Jannah and Hell among them. Belief in predestination, Qadr, holds that Allah decreed all things before they came to be, and that they were written.
