Q & A

Does a writer’s spiritual state affect the reader?

Purification of the Heart

The scholars say that a book written on worldly matters by someone whose heart is pure may be more beneficial than a book written on religious matters by someone whose heart is still engulfed in darkness, as the state of the writer affects the state of the reader.

A teacher's own state affects his seeker either way. One who knows the taste of the Divine Love would be able to lead the seeker through the journey of Tasawwuf, but where the teacher has not trudged that path himself, his state of heart would affect the seeker and both would remain lost.

The same goes for the modern Sufis who claim to be authorities on Tasawwuf, or so-called Sufism, by reading books: they are those who stand at the ridge without any knowledge of the worlds beyond. The writers may write long passages, but it is the one who drinks from the fountain that knows the taste of the Divine Love.
