Q & A
What do Muslims believe about Jesus, and was he crucified?
As Muslims we believe in all of the Prophets and Messengers of Allah, and accept Eesa peace be upon him, Jesus, as a Messenger and slave of Allah. Allah describes Eesa peace be upon him as:
"He is only a slave whom We have graced, and made him an example for the Children of Israel." [Qur'an, az-Zukhruf 43:59]
We as Muslims do not believe in the Trinity or in Eesa peace be upon him as the son of God, even though he was born of a virgin, without a father. Islam rejects any idea of Eesa peace be upon him being a son of God, hypostasis of God or incarnate. Allah mentions his birth in the Qur'an:
"O people of the Scripture (Christians)! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of Allah aught but the truth. The Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, ('Be!' - and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary) and a spirit (Ruh) created by Him; so believe in Allah and His Messengers. Say not: 'Three (trinity)!' Cease! (it is) better for you. For Allah is (the only) One Ilah (God), Glory be to Him (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is All-Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs." [Qur'an, an-Nisa 4:171]
Eesa peace be upon him did not die on the cross; instead, Allah raised him up to the heavens and someone else was crucified. As the Qur'an mentions:
"They neither killed him, nor crucified him, it appeared so to them. Rather, He took him up to Him. Allah is ever Mighty, Wise." [Qur'an, an-Nisa 4:157-158]
